BIO

Raúl Hidalgo (1979) is a photographer from Barcelona. He always works in analogue and loves the whole process of chemical photography. He specializes in portraits and his work is intimate with poetic undertones. Much of his visual aesthetic is inspired by cinema and painting.

Many his portraits are of the LGBTQ+ community, artists and friends, exploring themes of identity, gender, acceptance and empowerment.
One of his most notable projects, “shot by shot”, is an ongoing series of portraits honoring photographers and film directors such as Sakiko Nomura, Jonas Mekas, Isabel Coixet, Greg Gorman, Colita, and Bob Gruen.

His work has been published in various fashion and art magazines and he has mounted numerous exhibitions in diverse formats, which have featured in many renowned photography festivals.

One of his audiovisual works, “Alquimia del dolor” (Alchemy of Pain) is held in the permanent collection of XCèntric (The Centre of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona).

In 2021 Raúl launched his most personal project “desde el silencio” (From the Silence), which visually portrays the progressive and unstoppable loss of his hearing. Twenty photos from this series were acquired by the National Photography Archive of Catalonia in 2022.

In December 2021 he was awarded the SIGMA Vision prize for his project “la casa de la portera”.
